He is a member of the Punjab legislative Assembly but what truly defines him is his voice, which has come in handy in his new profession.
Singer Mohammad Sadiq made his entry into politics after defeating former Punjab chief secretary D S Guru from Bhadaur in Barnala district. He now delights crowds at rallies while weaving a political message into his lyrics. The Indian Express spotted Sadiq at Dheemawali village where he was entertaining the crowd along with his troupe as PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa and CLP leader Sunil Jakhar had not arrived.
Sadiq admits he is happy singing as opposed to giving political speeches but nevertheless, does his bit by getting the crowd to raise party slogans in between the melody.
Singing is my only source of income but now I serve my party more. The Congress gave me a ticket only because of singing despite the fact that I had no political background, Sadiq says.
After I joined politics,my income no doubt has reduced but it hardly matters because I dont have any liabilities now as my children are well settled. But yes,I cannot live without singing. I sing for about an hour every day. A singer cannot live without singing, he adds.
On Wednesday,Sadiq narrated the katha of do soorme but not surprisingly, added political under tones to the script focussing on the Congress-SAD rivalry. I narrate the atrocities of the ruling alliance through my songs and choose a few songs which fit the present condition of the SAD-BJP alliance apart from the entertaining ones, the Congress MLA explains. My troupe with about 14-15 people accompanies me to political rallies and they are given the due expenses by the organisers, though I am a party worker now, he adds.
