Sentenced in graft case, DMK MP to lose RS seat

With the court sentencing him for two years, Selvaganapathy, now spearheading his party’s election campaign in Dharmapuri, is set to lose his Rajya Sabha membership.

DMK’s Rajya Sabha member T M Selvaganapathy was Thursday convicted by a CBI court here in a corruption case, which was ironically filed by the then DMK government when he was in the AIADMK.

With the court sentencing him for two years, Selvaganapathy, now spearheading his party’s election campaign in Dharmapuri, is set to lose his Rajya Sabha membership.

The corruption case, which came to be known as the cremation shed scam, was filed by the DMK government when it returned to power after the 1996 election. Selvaganapathy was the local administration minister in AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa’s first ministry when the scam was reported by an IAS officer.

The official found that of the 100 cremation sheds reportedly constructed for Dalits in Nagapattinam district under the Jawahar Rojgar Yojna scheme in 1995-96, many existed only on paper or were of substandard quality.
