Over 47,000 students participated in the 17th edition of Salwan Marathon here today in the race touted as the world’s largest cross-country run for school children.
The all-new edition of this annually organised marathon also witnessed participation of about 1,700 visually challenged children,who ran through a long stretch of 3.5km across the woods at the Polo Grounds of the Army Equestrian Centre.
The event was flagged off by Lt Gen Munish Sibbal (AVSM),Qtr Master General,Indian Army.
In an effort to reach out to all the students community,Salwan Marathon had this year tied up with ‘Special Olympics Bharat’ and the NGO ‘Butterflies’ to get intellectually challenged students and street kids to participate in the run and with the schools for visually impaired students across India.
“It’s been a pride for us that the parents and the community itself kept faith on us for all the past sixteen years regardless from which caste,creed or socio-economic background they are coming from,” said Inder Dutt Salwan,trustee Salwan Education Trust and race director.
“Like any other year,this year the marathon remained quite challenging,as certain improvisations has been made to make it much more sporting to these children,” he added.
The marathon categorised participants in 8 different categories,Visually impaired,Intellectually challenged (3.5 kms),Under 14 Girls and Boys (3.5 kms),Under 16 Girls and Boys (5.5 kms) and Under 18 Girls and Boys races (8 kms).
Winners for respective categories were given a laptop while the first and second runner-ups took home Samsung Mobile and gift hampers.
UNICEF and FICCI supported the marathon.
