Rivals TMC, Left join hands to slam FDI in defence, rlys

The opposition came a day after the Cabinet cleared 100 per cent FDI in railways and 49 per cent FDI in defence sector.

Bitter rivals Trinamool Congress and the Left on Thursday echoed each other in Rajya Sabha to corner the government over the issue, FDI in defence and railways, and alleged that the decision was taken in a “hurry” which could amount to “selling” the country’s interests.

The opposition came a day after the Cabinet cleared 100 per cent FDI in railways and 49 per cent FDI in defence sector.

Trinamool Congress’s Derek O’Brien said the issue was serious and questioned the timing of the Cabinet nod, suspecting that the government was in a hurry to implement it ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to the United States in September.

Soon after the House assembled, O’Brien raised the issue but Chairman Hamid Ansari said the matter could be taken up later.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley told him that the issue was discussed in the House earlier at the time of the General and Railway Budget.

The growing bonhomie between the rival parties of West Bengal was evident when Sitaram Yechury (CPM) was seen drawing the attention of the Chair for taking up the TMC leader’s notice for suspension of Question Hour for raising the issue.
