Resolution backs independent body to fix MPs’ salary

Official sources said the conference also called upon the states to ensure a uniformity vis-a-vis salaries of legislators across the country with varying allowances, depending upon a variety of relevant factors in each state.

The 17th All-India Whips Conference, held at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, adopted a resolution Wednesday supporting a government proposal that an independent “Emoluments Commission” may be constituted for fixing the salary and allowances for Members of Parliament.

The two-day conference concluded Wednesday. Official sources said the conference also called upon the states to ensure a uniformity vis-a-vis salaries of legislators across the country with varying allowances, depending upon a variety of relevant factors in each state.

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs had mooted the proposal envisaging a three-member “Emoluments Commission” for determining the salary and allowances of MPs, keeping in view their responsibilities in a transparent manner.
