According to police officials Attavar does not have any known criminal record though his partner has been associated with elements having police records. Attavar has been associated with the Sri Rama Sene since its inception in 2004
On the day of the pub attack Attavar himself claims to have been away from Mangalore organizing activities of the Sene. His role has emerged in the attack case following his justification of the attacks as an effort to protect Indian culture and tradition.
