Kapurthala police,on Friday, arrested two person from West Bengal for allegedly charging money from students to allow them to cheat in exams.

Kapurthala police,on Friday, arrested two person from West Bengal for allegedly charging money from students to allow them to cheat in exams. The arrests were made after a complaint from Punjab Technical University (PTU) whose regional centres have now come under the scanner.

Raids were conducted across 15 states, where money was being charged from students of PTU’s distance education programme — run from learning centres (LCs) in PTU-authorised regional centres (RCs) — in lieu of allowing them to cheat in exams.

PTU authorities alleged that money was being extorted on PTU’s name from students in the learning centres by the owners and mangers of three RCs: Matrix Infosys,UCPL and Ekta Computers — all authorised by PTU.

At a joint press conference attended by PTU V-C Rajneesh Arora,SSP (Kapurthala) Inderbir Singh and Minister of Technical Education Anil Joshi — through video conferencing — it was revealed that a complaint was made by PTU to Kapurthala police on October 23 on the basis of complaints received from LCs and students. Four were named in the complaint including Ajesh Gugnani and Sanjeev Gugnani,Gautam Banerjee and Sabal Kanta.

“The mangers of these RCs were making false promises to students and parents,” said Arora.

“After preliminary inquiry, police parties were formed and simultaneous raids were conducted at all the offices of the three RCs in Delhi,Patna,Bhop,Kolkata and North east states,” informed SSP Inderbir Singh adding: “Police arrested Gautam Banerjee and Sabal Kanta from Kolkata and are being brought to Kapurthala.”

Arora added that Matrix Infosys had previously been found indulging in overcharging fees from students and the university had suspended its services. It,however,re-appointed the company in March for another five years to act as RC for all north-east states,West Bengal and Sikkim by judging its performance as very good.

It is interesting to note that Ajesh and Sanjeev Gugnani had recently filed a case against Arora and PTU Registrar for which they were to appear in Punjab and Haryana High Court on October 31.

Arora refused to reply on his pending court case and remained mum on the issue as to why PTU had not acted earlier when they received complaints in August.
