Political leaders speak out against Manipur crisis, back tribals in neighbouring state

Although the contents of the Naga Accord are not yet known, there is hearsay that Naga areas of Manipur are likely to be given an Autonomous District Council.

Political leaders in Mizoram on Friday reiterated their support for the hill tribes of Manipur. Congress veteran and five-time Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said at the weekly political session at the party offices in Aizawl that the “regrettable” violence in Churachandpur broke out because MLAs from the region attended the assembly session that passed the three bills Manipur’s tribals are against.

“The Naga MLAs did not attend and trouble did not break out in the Naga areas. But in the ethnic Zo areas MLAs attended in spite of being asked to abstain and thats why there was trouble. This is very regrettable,” he said.

Although the contents of the Naga Accord are not yet known, there is hearsay that Naga areas of Manipur are likely to be given an Autonomous District Council, he said, adding, “In such a situation, we have written to Prime Minister Modi that if Nagas are granted autonomy then Kukis, who have a territory of their own, must be granted the same kind of autonomy.”

Mizo National Front president and former CM Zoramthanga meanwhile said at a meet at Hnam Run, the party headquarters, that, “The Congress government in Manipur wishes to use the three new laws to drag the tribals, their land and their religion into a river of extinction.

“It is only right that the tribals are resisting this. The tribals of Manipur are our brethren, and we will not allow them to be overwhelmed. We are ready to help them in any way and we announce this before the world,” Zoramthanga said.
