Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s healthy attitude and respect towards the Nagas has made the peace agreement possible between the government of India and the NSCN(IM), Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang said in the state’s capital on Saturday.
“The prime minister has a healthy attitude and respect towards the Nagas, and thus enabled him to take such a bold and positive decision as a true statesman,” Zeliang said, unfurling the national flag in Kohima on the occasion of the 69th Independence Day.
Welcoming the agreement, the Nagaland Chief Minister also said that while the Naga political issue was in existence for the past six decades or more, it was due to the concerted efforts and hard work put in by all concerned that led to the NSCN(IM) and the government of India signed the agreement two weeks ago. He also thanked interlocutor R N Ravi for his hard work that also comprised of consultation with various mass-based Naga civil society groups that had contributed to the agreement.

Zeliang also highlighted that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly as well as the Nagaland Legislators’ Forum – the latter an all-party forum that also comprises of the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland – too had made significant contribution towards the government-NSCN(IM) agreement. Zeliang also said he hoped New Delhi would consult all concerned while working out the final agreement.
“At present only the broad framework of the agreement has been worked out. However, I am sure we will be consulted once the details of the agreements and modalities are worked out by the parties concerned,” he said.
Describing the overall law and order situation of Nagaland as by and large peaceful, Chief Minister Zeliang however, regretted that the Khaplang faction of NSCN had abrogated the ceasefire agreement it had signed with the government of India in 2011.
“The abrogation of ceasefire by NSCN (K) has led to the killing of several personnel of the security forces followed by the death and injury to some civilians in Phek district. This was very unfortunate,” he said.
