Pinki denied bail,counsel cries injustice

On a day when Pinki Pramanik was denied bail and again sent to judicial custody till July 12 for alleged rape, her counsel Tuhin Roy accused the authorities of “harassing” the athlete.

On a day when Pinki Pramanik was denied bail and again sent to judicial custody till July 12 for alleged rape, her counsel Tuhin Roy accused the authorities of “harassing” the athlete. He also regretted that judicial procedure was “delaying justice”.

“In the name of investigation Pinki is being taken from one hospital to another. Male police officers are accompanying her. This is causing mental trauma and physical harassment to her. I brought the matter to the court’s notice and the honourable judge has asked the authorities to handle the issue properly. We have also requested the court to decide a particular hospital with adequate facility for the gender verification test,” Roy told The Indian Express.

The lawyer was disappointed that the bail plea was rejected. “Law says one is innocent until proven guilty and we hoped Pinki would get the bail today.”

The court of chief judicial magistrate,Barasat,Anita Mathur,on Friday remanded Pramanik in further judicial custody till July 12. The court has also allowed the prosecution plea to take Pramanik for a (karyotype) chromosomal test to conclusively determine her gender.

The Asiad gold medal-winning athlete has undergone the gender test twice,at Barasat Sub Divisional Hospital and at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. At SSKM,on June 25,an 11-member medical board conducted other tests but the chromosomal test couldn’t be done and the result remains inconclusive.
