Over 200 people were rescued from areas cut off by heavy snowfall in Ramban and Kishtwar districts during the last two days.

A defence ministry spokesman said Rashtriya Rifles personnel deployed at Mohubal village in Banihal tehsil rescued eight civilians trapped in remote areas on the Pirpanjal range. The victims got trapped in an avalanche, he said adding that four of them were serious.

The information came around 4.30 pm and immediately, an RR column comprising an officer and nine jawans rushed to the spot despite poor visibility and imminent threat of avalanches. The team managed to evacuate the injured on stretchers, he said.

On Wednesday, an MI-17 IAF helicopter airlifted 203 people stranded at different places in remote parts of Kishtwar district for the last two days.
