Newly-wed burned alive for ‘dowry’ in Jharkhand

A newly-married woman was burned dead today allegedly by her husband and mother-in-law following the refusal of her parents to pay ‘dowry’ at a village in Potka area of East Singhbhum district.

The severely burnt 18-year-old Usha Rani Bhagat was rushed to M G M hospital,where she succumbed to injuries,police said.

Relatives of the victim have complained to the police that Usha was frequently tortured for dowry by her ‘unemployed’ husband Samar Bhagat,and his mother ever since they got married about two months ago.

The family had allegedly been demanding a gold ring from her parents,and the death followed a quarrel between the young couple over the issue last night,police said.

Both the husband and mother-in-law are absconding,they said.

Neighbourers had rescued Usha after she was seen burning inside a locked room.
