Nagaland CM Zeliang faces rebellion

Former CM Rio backs rebels; NPF suspends 7 legislators.

Nagaland CM T R Zeliang is in trouble with “majority” of the ruling Naga People’s Front (NFP) legislature party withdrawing support to him and naming industries minister G Kaito Aye as their new leader.

“We have already withdrawn support to the present leadership and are waiting for Governor P B Acharya to return to Kohima so that we can submit a formal letter staking claim to form a new government,” Imkong L Imchen, leader of the group that wants Zeliang’s removal said Tuesday.

He added that they were demanding Zeliang’s removal because he has been unable to push forward the Naga peace talks between the Centre and NSCN(IM) even after the NDA government’s seven months in office. “Also, Zeliang has failed to build a good relationship with the Centre. He has failed to place issues of Nagaland, including the ongoing financial crisis, before the Centre and the PM,” Imchen said.

Zeliang has, however, said he would not succumb to pressure tactics of some members.

“It is unfortunate that some disgruntled elements among the NPF legislators have placed their self-interest above the people’s welfare and have been brazenly trying to victimize the people by attempting to disrupt the smooth sailing of the duly elected Government,” he said Tuesday night.

NPF president Shurhozelie Liezietsu has already suspended seven MLAs including Aye for alleged violation of party discipline.
Liezietsu on Monday evening issued orders to suspend, besides Aye, minister of roads and bridges Kuzholuzo Nienu, parliamentary secretary for urban development Zhaleo Rio, parliamentary secretary for sericulture and cooperation Pukhayi, parliamentary secretary for fire and emergency services Pohwang Konyak, parliamentary secretary for fisheries Shetoyi, parliamentary secretary for science and technology, information technology and communication, technical education and taxation Tovihoto Avemi.

Meanwhile, former CM Neiphiu Rio and Rajya Sabha member Khekiho Zhimoni have issued a statement supporting the “majority” move. Sources said Rio, whose hopes for a ministerial berth in the Narendra Modi government remain unfulfilled, wants to return to state politics and supporting the dissidents is a step in this direction.

Insiders said among the 38 NPF MLAs in Assembly, 23 have joined the dissidents and more are expected to follow. They added that the state BJP is backing the dissidents.
