Days after the government signed a peace accord with National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak Muivah) or NSCN(IM), parallel efforts have been initiated by key Naga bodies to reach out to S S Khaplang, the Myanmar-based leader of the Khaplang faction.
The presidents of Naga Hoho, the apex body of Naga tribes, and Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) told The Indian Express that they have planned to travel to Myanmar after August 15 to meet NSCN(K) leaders and ask for resumption of the ceasefire between the outfit and the Government of India.

The MHA has given its nod to the move, stipulating that only designated access routes would be used and that the delegation carry proper travel documents, sources said. The government, however, appeared skeptical of any fruitful outcome, they said.
NSCN(K) had abrogated the 2001 ceasefire agreement in March this year, following which it launched a series of attacks on the security forces, the worst being an ambush in Manipur’s Chandel district on June 5. Eighteen Army personnel were killed in the incident.
The Nagaland government’s Parliamentary Working Committee of the recently constituted Joint Legislators’ Forum on the Naga political issue had last month decided to request Naga Hoho and ENPO to convey the desire of the state government and the people of the state for resumption of ceasefire between NSCN(K) and the Union government.
“Around four members from ENPO and four from Naga Hoho will be going there. We have heard that Khaplang will appoint some senior leaders to meet us. The meeting could take place in Paka, but the location is yet to be decided. We will only request for ceasefire,” said ENPO president S Khoiwang.
