In an indictment of the state police, the Bombay High Court on Thursday observed it seemed not “serious” in investigating the case of murderous assault on TISS professor Shamim Modi and handed it over to the Crime Branch CID.
“Police have not been serious in this matter,” said the division bench of Justices Bilal Nazki and A R Joshi and handed over the case to CB CID,asking it to complete the probe within three months.
Modi,an assistant professor with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences here, had moved the court seeking action against former Madhya Pradesh minister Kamal Patel in connection with the attack.
Modi, who had earlier worked for welfare of saw mill workers in Madhya Pradesh, had alleged in the petition that Patel,a former revenue minister and BJP leader, could be behind the incident. When working in Madhya Pradesh, she had once contested election against Patel.
Modi was set upon by two men near her residence in Vasai on July 23. Her throat was half-slit,but initially the police had only registered a case of robbery, and not attempt to murder.
In its Thursday’s order, the Court has not asked CID to implead any particular person. Of the two known assailants, one is in custody, while the other is suspected to have fled to Nepal.
