Manpreet sees govt hand in mass rejection of nomination papers

The People’s Party of Punjab Tuesday alleged that Akali ministers and leaders were masterminding large scale rejection of nomination papers of the opposition candidates for the July 3 panchayat elections.

PPP president Manpreet Badal said his party has received complaints from Mansa,Bathinda,Fatehgarh Sahib,Amritsar and several other constituencies. “To assume that so many people would not know how to file their candidature forms and that their errors would come to fore on the last day of nomination would be naïve. Clearly, the ruling establishment wants to kill the competition,” Manpreet said in a press statement.

Contacted,he alleged that Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon was getting nominations of opposition candidates rejected from Maur constituency while other senior Akali leaders were doing the same in Valtoha,Khanna and Mansa. “The nominations are being rejected on such grounds as no-due certificates and chulha tax. One can appeal to deputy commissioner, but it takes a year or two before he decides the case. The next stage is the moving the High Court, but by that time it is infructous,” he added.

Stating that rejecting nominations is a murder of democracy and a violation of fundamental rights,he urged the Election Commission to take corrective action.
