Make report public, present white paper: Cong to govt

A day after Punjab DGP (Prisons) Shashi Kant alleged nexus between top politicians, businessmen and the drug mafia operating in the state’s jails, the state Congress on Sunday demanded a white paper on the issue from the government.

A day after Punjab DGP (Prisons) Shashi Kant alleged nexus between top politicians, businessmen and the drug mafia operating in the state’s jails, the state Congress on Sunday demanded a white paper on the issue from the government.

It also demanded that Kant’s report to the state DGP naming jail officials involved in the narcotics trade be made public and an all-party committee of the Vidhan Sabha be sent to visit jails across the state. The party further asked the Union home minister to send a fact-finding team to Punjab to prevent drug trafficking.

On Saturday,Kant had claimed that he had prepared a list of 185 jail officials involved in the narcotics trade. “I had sent a detailed report,on the basis of inputs from the intelligence agencies in the state and at the Centre,to the Punjab DGP a year ago before my retirement but till now,no action has been taken on the report which would have put many top political leaders and businessmen in the dock,” he had said.

Congress spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira, while speaking to mediapersons in Jalandhar, said: “A former DGP has made a specific charge and prepared a report, which contains the names of 185 top officials besides top 10 politicians and several businessmen and had sent the same to the DGP Sumedh Saini about a year ago. But unfortunately,it is a matter of shame and disgrace that the DGP has pushed this sensational report under the wraps. It only goes to show that the DGP and the government are shielding and protecting politician-police-drug mafia nexus, thus doing a great disservice to the state, besides abdicating their authority.”

“Unfortunately, those in power, instead of curbing this menace with an iron hand, have become facilitators of drugs. Different reports of GNDU,NGOs and other organisations have indicated to 70 per cent youth taking to drugs in the state. Politicians cutting across parties,in order to reap personal gains, have added to the woes of the people by distributing drugs during elections. This also includes the religious body of SGPC,” added Khaira.
