The Governor of Maharashtra, C Vidyasagar Rao on Saturday held consultations with top officials of home and law departments on the mercy petition submitted by 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict Yakub Memon.

At the end of the meeting sources said, “The matter is under consideration. But there is no formal decision conveyed to the state government as yet. It is expected soon.”

The state government had sent the proposal to the Governor late Friday night. Memon had again sought stay on the execution of death sentence slated for July 30 at Nagpur Central Jail. The Supreme Court has rejected his curative petition last week.

Earlier, the Governor held discussions with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) K P Bakshi, Advocate General Anil Singh and officials from the departments of law and justice. Sources in the Governor’s office said, “At the moment there has been no formal decision taken. The entire matter is under the consideration of the Governor. Nothing has been conveyed to the state government.”

A senior official said, “On Monday, the Supreme Court is expected to hear Memon’s plea. The state and constitutional authorities would be awaiting to see what the apex court decides before going ahead. It is unlikely that the Governor would rush the matter before the apex court’s decision. We moved the proposal with our views which were discussed at length.” Earlier, the state government had indicated the decisions would be in accordance with orders from apex courts and the Governor.
