Lawyers’ bodies demand resignation of Swatanter Kumar

All India Bar Association condemned the incident and submitted a memorandum to the President demanding Justice Kumar 's immediate removal.

A clutch of lawyers’ organisations came together Tuesday, demanding the resignation of National Green Tribunal (NGT) chairman Justice Swatanter Kumar over allegations of sexual harassment by a former law intern.

All India Legal Aid Forum (AILAF), Human Rights Defence International and All India Bar Association condemned the incident and submitted a memorandum to the President demanding his immediate removal.

“We also condemn the audacity of Justice Swatanter Kumar who instead of showing willingness to subject himself to investigation has been sending legal notices to organisations/media houses threatening legal action against them. It is a clear violation of freedom of speech and expression and freedom of the press which is guaranteed under the Constitution,” said general secretary of AILAF Joydeep Mukherjee. The outfits have called upon lawyers at NGT to boycott Justice Kumar’s Bench.
