The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Tuesday strongly opposed the Land Acquisition Bill in its present form.
At an emergency meeting of the party’s core committee held in New Delhi, it was decided to oppose any land acquisition without the consent of farmers or land owners whose land is to be acquired. The party also decided that land should only be acquired for public purpose and the government should not get into acquisition for private entities.
“We propose that Punjab Land Acquisition Policy should be followed while finalising a national policy on the subject,” the party resolution said.
The SAD core committee met to formulate the party’s response to the proposed Bill that is to come before Parliament this week. The meeting was chaired by SAD president and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. The Chief Minister and patron of the party, Parkash Singh Badal, was also present and cleared the party’s stand on the Bill.
