To counter concerns over wastage of milk in Karnataka due to surplus milk production, the state government has proposed increasing the number of days that free milk is provided to children in government schools from three to five days under its Ksheera Bhagya scheme.

In a meeting held with officials of the Karnataka Milk Federation on Monday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked officials to explore the option of distributing surplus milk produced in the state to schools.

“Out of over 70 lakh liters of milk procured per day 40 lakh litres is sold as direct products and around 30 lakh is sold in various forms. We are in a position to mobilize 10 lakh additional litres to provide one crore children in anganwadi and other educational institutions milk through the week,” the Commissioner for Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers Federation Limited (KMF) Jayaram S N said.

Under the Ksheera Bhagya scheme, school students in Karnataka get 150 ml of milk each on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The scheme was introduced two years ago when the Congress government came to power in Karnataka. Siddaramiah also asked KMF officials to focus on building the KMF brand to make it help it find a better market across the country.
