Justice Ganguly reacts to Express report: ‘I cannot be compelled to speak on this issue’

“I will not answer to anything. I will not answer to any question. I cannot be compelled to speak on this issue.” This was West Bengal Human Rights Commission chairman Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly’s first reaction to Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising’s revelation of the law intern’s sworn affidavit alleging sexual harassment by the retired judge at a hotel in New Delhi late last year.

Asked about his stand on the article,Justice Ganguly said: “I am yet to go through the report. I have been told that some report has come out in the paper.”

Meanwhile,reacting to the report,eminent author and Magsaysay awardee Mahashweta Devi today told The Indian Express,”Justice Ganguly should resign from his post on the grounds of human rights violation,if not for anything else.”

A PIL has been filed by an advocate in the Calcutta High Court stating that Justice Ganguly should resign from his post in the WBHRC is likely to come up for hearing in the High Court on Monday. Justice Ganguly,however,said he was not aware of the PIL.

Some demonstrations are also slated to be held at the Justice Ganguly’s office this afternoon.
