On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday foiled a major Hizbul Mujahideen plot to carry out a terror strike there.
Two youths from Mandi area of Poonch district, identified as Mohammad Azam and Sikandar Khan, were arrested with arms, ammunition and explosives. They were on their way to the Valley from Poonch via Mughal road in a new Xylo car, police said, adding that four grenades, a loaded Chinese pistol and 40 AK-47 rounds were seized.
Sources said that Azam, 25, is the main conduit of Hizbul Mujahideen in the area and his father Mohammad Akbar and brother are in Pakistan. He was already under the scanner of various security agencies and was released from detention only a few months ago.
The vehicle was intercepted by a special police team, which had laid a naka at Panar bridge near Chandimarh village. The car had been purchased by Azam recently.
Police are trying to find out how he got the money to buy the car, sources said, adding that he had engaged Khan as the driver. However, Khan’s role is still being probed, sources said. This was their first trip to the Valley after purchasing the vehicle, sources added.
Modi had on Tuesday tweeted that he “will be in Srinagar on Diwali, October 23 and will spend the day with our sisters and brothers affected by the unfortunate flood”. He is likely to reach Srinagar in the afternoon and meet local delegations comprising women and children at Raj Bhavan so he can take stock of the situation. He is also likely to visit one of the relief camps set up for flood-hit people in Srinagar, besides holding a meeting with senior Army, police and civil officers before returning to Delhi the same evening.
Security in the Valley has been beefed up, with police and paramilitary personnel deployed at sensitive places. The security measures were reviewed at a high-level meeting chaired by state DGP K Rajendra on Wednesday.
