Jaya fooling people by repeating charge on EVMs: Karuna

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi asked Jaya Lalitha to prove before the Election Commission her charge that EVMs could be tampered with.

Criticising AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa for repeatedly blaming EVMs and citing it as a reason for boycotting Aug 18 assembly bypolls,Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Thursday asked her to prove before the Election Commission her charge that EVMs could be tampered with.

In a letter to his partymen here,Karunanidhi said the EC had repeatedly denied possibilities of tampering with the EVMs,asking those making such complaints including the PMK,to prove their allegations before the officials.

“Jayalalithaa and co. should do this before the EC.

Instead, she is persisting with her claim and citing it as a reason for boycotting the by-elections to five Assembly constituencies. This amounts to fooling the people,” he said.

Recalling that she had been raising the issue since 2000,Karunanidhi said her party had won the 2001 Assembly elections in which EVMs were used.

Noting the recent demonstration by an NGO that EVMs can be tampered with,Jayalalithaa had yesterday said “this should come as an eye-opener not only to the Election Commission but also to voting public.” She said the AIADMK had decided to boycott the bypolls to ensure that democracy,in its true sense, was brought back.

PMK,an ally of AIADMK,which drew a blank in the recent Lok Sabha elections despite contesting seven seats, has also been strongly critical of EVMs.
