Barack Obama’s team includes a Gujarat-origin member of Congress, another Congressman who once pushed for the civil nuclear agreement, and officials whose tasks include overseeing climate change, energy and business.
Ami Bera is the only Indian-American member of Congress; his parents had once migrated to the US from Gujarat.
Joe Crowley is the New York rep who led the Democratic whip effort as part of the Congressional push to secure the enactment of the nuclear deal.
“I strongly believe that the United States-Indian relationship should and will serve as a key building block of US foreign policy in the decades ahead. Working together, the United States and India can be a transformational force in meeting global challenges,” Crowley said on his website before leaving for India.
Also in the team is counselor to Obama John Podesta, whose duties include overseeing climate change and energy policy besides others. “Honored to join @WhiteHouse India visit. Crucial chance to strengthen strategic & economic ties,” Bera tweeted before starting the trip.
