A 45-year-old lady who sustained severe head injuries in a road traffic accident on March 24, and was declared brain dead three days later, saved eight lives after family members consented to donate her organs.
AIIMS spokesperson Dr Amit Gupta said, “As per the standard operating procedure, the ORBO (Organ Retrieval and Banking Organization) was alerted and the transplant coordinator of AIIMS counselled the family of the deceased for organ donation. The husband and brother of deceased gave their consent to donate liver, heart, both kidneys and both corneas of the deceased.”
The transplant took place on the wee hours of Friday, March 28, which is also the Organ Donation Day in India. The organ retrieval was done by a team of AIIMS doctors and the organs were transplanted later in the day.
“The retrieved kidneys were transplanted — one to an adult, the other to a child. Her liver was transplanted on an adult by the kidney transplant team of the Department of Surgical Disciplines. The heart valves and corneas were preserved to be transplanted to suitable recipients later,” Gupta said.
