The BJP on Friday asked the Congress leadership to break its silence on an alleged move by the former UPA government to bend rules in the Golden Quadrilateral highway project to help “crony contractors.” Taking up an issue highlighted by news portal Cobrapost, which availed the documents through RTI, BJP spokesperson MJ Akbar said at a specially convened press conference: “Rules were changed in order to improve relations between Congress and crony contractors. Both Kamal Nath and P Chidambaram were named (by Cobrapost). Why is the Congress leadership silent? Did money go all the way till the top, including Rahul Gandhi?” The website has found that the UPA government in 2006 decided to change its earlier proposal of changing 6,500 km of highways from four lane to six lane by changing the norms. RTI activist Vivek Garg had found out that in at least two cases the then government bent the rules to help the private sector.
