Head Constable dies in accidental firing

A 49-year-old Head Constable died at a police station in New Delhi when another policeman who was getting a service pistol checked accidentally fired at him.

A 49-year-old Head Constable died at a police station here today when another policeman who was getting a service pistol checked accidentally fired at him.

The incident took place at Connaught Place police station at around 11:15 am and the victim has been identified as T P Illyas,a native of Kerala who was residing in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi with his family,police said.

He was posted with the armoural team of New Delhi Police district and assigned with the training of new recruits posted in police stations and maintenance of arms,a senior police official said.

“There was a training session for five-six policemen at the Connaught Place police station. Illyas and other personnel were in courtyard near the ‘maalkhana’ (inventory) of the police station,” the official said.

A recently recruited constable Mohit was standing on his right side and was getting checked a 9 mm pistol.

“Illyas asked Mohit to open the pistol. However,the magazines were not removed from it. While trying to open the firearm,it misfired and a bullet passed through the right side of Illyas’ chest,” the official said.

“The bullet pierced the body. His liver and heart were damaged in the incident,” he said.

Illyas was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. A constable who was standing near Illays also suffered minor injuries,the official said.
