The Allahabad High Court today directed the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that tanneries in Kanpur were shifted to localities from where discharge of effluents into the river Ganga could be effectively checked.
A Division Bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice Arun Tandon directed the Principal Secretary,Industrial Development,to comply with the order, while hearing a PIL drawing attention to the pollution in the holy river.
Fixing January 25 as the next date of hearing, the court also asked the Additional Advocate General to file an affidavit describing the steps taken by the state government against the Municipal Commissioner of Kanpur against whom a complaint and recommendation for prosecution had been made by the U.P. Pollution Control Board.
The Board had,by way of an affidavit filed last month, accused the official of failure to check discharge of effluents into the river despite repeated court orders.
Meanwhile,a three-member committee constituted by the court to inspect pollution level at the holy Sangam, where the annual religious congregation of Magh Mela is also underway, has submitted that though the water was sufficient in quantity,it was yet not potable.
The court has directed the state authorities to continue releasing 2500 cusecs of water from the Narora dam in Saharanpur as ordered earlier.
