Days after Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal ordered a probe into alleged irregularities in the purchase of science kits for schools,the education department has stopped the distribution of such kits for the time being.
This comes after the department has already purchased science kits worth Rs 7.5 crore and dispatched these to all districts in Punjab.
In Ludhiana,a few kits have already been sent to around five schools before the verbal orders were issued by the department. Hence,District Education Officer (DEO) Paramjeet Kaur has asked these schools not to open the kits till further orders.
According to sources,around 8,000 kits have been delivered for government schools kit for one lab is worth Rs 98,000. Sources added that while the demand for these kits had been placed about three years ago,these have arrived only recently. These are now being stored in the education department stores across the districts.
About two days ago,a function had also been reportedly organised in Faridkot,in which MLA Deep Malhotra and MP Paramjeet Kaur Gulshan were supposed to distribute these kits to the concerned science supervisors,but at the the last minute,the event was called off and the science supervisors sent back.
When contacted,Ludhiana DEO Paramjeet Kaur,said: We have stopped the distribution of science kits for the time being and are waiting for further orders.
