Guwahati, January 19: The on-going operations by security forces against NDFB(S) in the wake of the December 23 massacre that had left over 80 persons dead continued to yield results with 18 more members of the dreaded militant group falling into the security dragnet today. Those apprehended included one Bikunas Narzary alias Birlangbai, self-styled commander of the 13th Battalion of the NDFB(S).
While five terrorists including Bikunas Narzary were apprehended during a joint operation conducted by the Army, NIA and Assam Police in forests along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary in Udalguri district, security forces recovered from them one AK-56 rifle with a magazine, one 9-mm pistol, one hand-grenade, 25 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and 54 rounds of 9-mm ammunition, a press release issued by Guwahati-based Army PRO Lt Col Suneet Newton said. The other four terrorists apprehended in this operation were identified as Bidai Singh Narzary alias Bugdaw, Lohit Basumatry alias B Ferkw, N Araibaw alias Aijak Narzary and Dura Singh Brahma alias B Khamshaw.
In another simultaneous operation, security forces apprehended 11 members of the NDFB(S) from the Panbari forest in Chirang district bordering Bhutan. Arms recovered from them included two pistols, two IEDs, nine detonators and some assorted ammunition. Security forces also apprehended one self-styled Sergeant Bimal Boro alias Khwobla, a platoon commander of the NDFB(S)’s Nalbari unit from Anthaibari in Baska district, also bordering Bhutan. Another NDFB(S) cadre called Birsing Basumatary on the other hand was picked up by a joint team of army, Guwahati City Police and CRPF from a locality in Guwahati today.
Another joint operation by security forces in Karbi Anglong district on the other hand led to the apprehension of eight suspected cadres of the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT), a dreaded armed group that had indulged in a series of violent acts including abduction and extortions in the hill district.
Security forces including slueths from the NIA had only Saturday recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition of the NDFB(S) from forests on the Assam-Arunachal border in Sonitpur district. The recoveries include two AK-56 rifles, one HK-5.56 rifle, one pistol, two grenades a large quantity of different types of ammunition.
