Eight persons killed after a vehicle fell into a deep gorge in Pithoragarh

9 persons were travelling in the vehicle which fell into about 700-meter deep gorge near Matela Band.

Eight persons, including a Deputy-SP rank officer Mahipal Singh Pal, were killed after a vehicle fell into a deep gorge near Matela Band in Uttarakhand’s Pithorgarh district on Sunday afternoon.

Pal, who was posted as the Circle Officer of Pithoragarh, was on way from Haldwani to Pithoragarh in the same vehicle.

Pithoragarh district is located in the upper range of Himalayas in the state. The vehicle was going to Dharchula, CM Harish Rawat’s assembly seat, which falls in Pithoragarh district.

On being contacted, SP (Pithoragarh) Roshan Lal Sharma said total 9 persons were travelling in the vehicle which fell into about 700-meter deep gorge near Matela Band.

“Five persons were killed on the spot. Three persons died on way to a hospital,” Sharma said.

According to him, CO Pal was on way from Haldwani to Pithoragarh in the same vehicle. He added CO Pal had gone to Dehradun for official works.

Pal reached Haldwani today morning by a train from Dehradun and then caught the vehicle on his way to Pithoragarh.

Pal was posted in Pithoragarh since June 2013, he replied to a question. He also added two women are among the eight dead persons.
