An 18-year-old Dutch student was allegedly abducted and raped by an autorickshaw driver and his accomplice in a secluded spot near Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon (East) in Mumbai on Monday.

Fighting off the duo,the victim managed to flee to a housing colony next to Vanrai police station and was rescued by residents. “We have eyewitnesses who have seen the accused. Based on their description,we have prepared sketches of the two and are tracing them. We are also seeking the help of local rickshaw drivers,” said Ramrao Pawar,Additional Commissioner of Police (North Region).

In her statement to the police, the victim said she came to the city 15 days ago. On Christmas night, she had gone to a friend’s house in Vasai and was accompanied by a male friend on her way back to Mulund, where she is staying.

At 1 am on Monday, she and her friend took a rickshaw from Vasai and reached Dahisar check post. From there, they took another rickshaw and the victim’s friend got off at Kandivali. She asked the driver to take her via the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) as she was familiar with the route.

The woman told the police that after crossing Malad, the driver allegedly stopped the vehicle and another man sat beside him. The driver then allegedly took a sudden left turn towards Aarey Milk Colony even as she protested. When they reached a lonely spot behind Vanrai police station, the driver’s accomplice allegedly got off and sat next to the victim. She told the police that he gagged her and took off her jeans. The two men then allegedly raped her and also robbed her of her purse, which had Rs 8,000 in cash, her iPhone and passport. When they forced themselves on her again, she kicked them and fled.

The men followed her as she shouted for help. The residents of Om building number 21 heard her screams and came to her rescue. Then they took her to the police station to register a complaint.

Kama Sheesh Upre (28),a composer working for a Thane-based animation company, said: “Around 1.30 am,I heard a woman cry for help. I looked out of the window and saw someone running. I rushed down but couldn’t see anything as it was dark.”

Upre added,“I then climbed the boundary wall and saw a woman shouting ‘help me please’. I,and a few others, held her hand and pulled her up into the building. We gave her water and after calming her down, took her to the police station. It seemed like she had been tortured and had bruises all over her body. When we asked her whether she was raped, the girl said yes.”

Milli Oza,CEO of Nack exhibitions and display company, who has her office in the vicinity, said: “I work late. Being a secluded area, such incidents may happen again. Although there is round-the-clock police patrolling, they just make a round of the main roads and do not really bother about the jungle area that is frequented by goons.”

The Vanrai police have registered a case of rape, kidnapping, robbery and common criminal intention against the two accused. “When we asked the girl to go for a medical test at Nagpada police hospital, she refused. But we have registered a case.”
