Crorepati duo from Cong,BJP to clash for Surat-West by-poll

The Congress candidate has liabilities worth Rs 9.37 lakh.

It is expected to be largely a straight fight between two crorepati candidates from the BJP and the Congress when the by-election for the Surat-West assembly constitute in Gujarat gets underway on December 4.

The Congress nominee Dalpat Patel with declared assets of Rs 5.12 crore is the richest among the 12 candidates who are contesting this by-poll for this assembly seat. His rival from the BJP,Purneshkumar Modi has assets worth Rs 1.46 crore,states an analysis done by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Purneshkumar – who is the only candidate in the fray to have serious criminal charges including that of extortion – also has the highest liabilities of Rs 28.87 lakh. The Congress candidate has liabilities worth Rs 9.37 lakh.

While the average asset of all the 12 contesting candidates is Rs 58.44 lakh,independent candidate Pathan Shabbirkhan Ahmadkhan has no assets.

Similarly,another independent,Shaikh Asifmiya Mohamdhusain has assets as low as Rs 20,000,the analysis added.

Among the independents,Godil Nazir Hanif is the richest with declared assets of Rs 24.06 lakh.

This seat had fallen vacant after BJP MLA Kishore Vankawala passed away in the last week of June this year.
