Cong MLA apologises for barbs on Idukki bishop

Balram’s reference to the bishop snowballed into an embarrassment for the Congress at election time.

Under fire from the party, young Congress legislator V T Balram on Monday apologised for his Facebook comment in which he made a reference to Idukki bishop Mathew Anikuzhikkattil as a “wretched” creature.

Balram was provoked by the bishop’s cold shoulder to Congress candidate Dean Kuriakose when he called on the bishop. Balram said it was a pity that there were “wretched” creatures who shoo away when someone visits them for vote.

Balram’s reference to the bishop, who is already at war with sitting MP P T Thomas, snowballed into an embarrassment for the Congress at election time.

The Youth Congress alleged that Balram has a hidden agenda to ensure the defeat of Kuriakose, who is the organisation’s state president. The Idukki diocese too came out against Balram.

On Monday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy came down heavily on Balram, saying the word “wretched” creature should not be used by a Congress worker.

Ticked-off by the Chief Minister, Balram subsequently said, “What I referred to was an attitude, not to any person. The word wretched creature’s pertinence was questioned by many. Hence, I am apologising for it.”
