CM,other ministers skip session,draw dy Speaker ire

Ministers,including CM Prithviraj Chavan,were absent in the legislative Assembly Thursday when the opposition demanded a discussion on a special package to Vidarbha farmers

Ministers,including CM Prithviraj Chavan,were absent in the legislative Assembly Thursday when the opposition demanded a discussion on a special package to Vidarbha farmers,who suffered heavy losses due to rain during June-July.

Furious,deputy Speaker Vasant Purke said it was high time drastic action was taken against ministers not taking the monsoon session seriously.

He said,“When MLAs misbehave,they invite suspension. It is time we teach ministers a lesson by ordering their suspension.”

Chavan had left for Pandharpur early Thursday. He did not hand over responsibility to any of his senior colleagues,creating confusion.

Some ministers were in Mumbai but confined to their chambers or planning to leave to their constituencies,while minister for parliamentary affairs Harshvardhan Patil was unwell.

BJP MLA Devendra Fadnavis,who expressed disappointment at government apathy towards farmers,got Congress support.

He said,“None of the ministers who should be replying on farmer issues is present in the Assembly. What can we expect from a government which is not serious about legislative business?
