WITH THE CBI deciding to question her in the multi-crore NRHM scam in Uttar Pradesh, BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday accused the BJP-led central government of misusing the investigation agency to target her.
“I have no connection with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. BJP, which is trying to use CBI, should give up such tactics as such attempts have cost them dearly in the past,” she said, adding that the agency’s decision to question her four years after the scam came to light reeked of political vendetta.

The government was quick to respond. “The CBI does its work on the basis of proofs. There is no need to draw any other conclusion,” Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said when asked for a reaction to Mayawati’s remarks.
The BSP chief also questioned the timing of the CBI investigation against her, saying this was an attempt to “demoralise” her party cadre and an attempt by the central government to deflect attention from their failures in fulfilling their promises made to the people.
She said that the news of her probable questioning was “leaked to the media” in a bid to demoralise her and her party workers ahead of the Bihar assembly elections. Such tactics, she said, will not help the BJP. She said that the CBI’s decision to question her could be the handiwork of some “casteist officers” who have a biased mindset against Dalits.
“I warn BJP to give up such deeds. Congress had also tried such tricks to divert attention from its failures of governance.”
On the alleged scam that occurred during her term as chief minister between 2007 and 2012, Mayawati said that the decision was taken by her cabinet and subsequent decisions on appointing two chief medical officers in every district was taken by the minister concerned Babulal Kushwaha.
