BSF alert on Indo-Bangladesh border: Kumawat

He was speaking on the sidelines of a function which marked the passing out parade of 307 CISF Sub-Inspectors at National Industrial Security Academy in Hyderabad.

There are some areas along the 4,096 km Indo-Bangla border which are porous and if the BDR soldiers manage to enter,the force will apprehend them,he said adding “they will be disarmed and handed over back to Bangladesh government.”

“We are with Bangladesh government in this regard,” he said.

The government has sanctioned another 29 battalions for BSF which has strength of 2.10 lakh and 509 border outposts will come into force in next five years costing about Rs 1,800 crores particularly in the eastern frontier where fencing work started little late compared to western frontier alongside Pakistan,the top BSF official said.

“We have fenced 2,800 km of Indo-Pakistan border. Besides there are floodlights,watch towers and border roads,but it is not the case with Indo-Bangladesh border. This border stretch is much more difficult and much more complex to guard because of the 1,100 km riverine border,” Kumawat said.

It is very difficult to fence rivers and especially mighty rivers like Brahmaputra,he said adding there are many villages right on the zero line and “we cannot make fences passing through their houses and villages due to international regulations.”

However,the BSF has requested the Bangladesh government to allow BSF to build a fence. Hopefully,in the next two-year time entire border along Bangladesh will be fenced. The border also has more number of outposts besides overcrafts and other measures to make India’s border with Bangladesh safer,Kumawat added.
