The spurious liquor that has claimed 107 lives in the city had come from Mahemdabad in neighbouring Kheda district, city crime branch officials investigating the case said on Friday. "A consignment of spurious brew was brought to Ahmedabad from Mahemdabad and distributed in different parts of the city," informed a crime branch official. "We are investigating the matter and questioning some of the local bootleggers who have been rounded up," he said. The Gujarat Congress had yesterday alleged that one sitting BJP corporator of Mahemdabad municipality was behind the entire hooch tragedy and had supplied the spurious liquor to the city. According to sources in Mahemdabad police, the BJP corporator, who was named by Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil, has been absconding since Thursday. Separate units were sent to the corporator's house and office but he was not found, they said. Meanwhile, the man who allegedly supplied the consignment of spurious brew to the city,Harishankar Kahar alias Hari Om was sent to police custody after he was produced before Magistrate B T Dave at his residence late night. City crime branch officials said that Kahar's custody was sought to get information on the source of the illicit liquor which he had allegedly supplied. In a separate case,Kahar has been booked under PASA (Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act) besides 15 cases under Prohibition Act have also been registered against him. He was out on bail since February 2009 after a Gujarat High Court ruling. The officials said that they have rounded up over ten aides of Kahar for questioning. This might lead to some of the key players involved in the business, they said.
