A prominent organisation championing the cause of safety of Indian students in Australia has alleged that the government there was not taking prompt action to check such incidents.
What the Australian government is saying is far from what is actually happening on the Indian students there. In the last 15 days, there have been five incidents of attack on Indian students. There is lack of accountability on part of the Australian government to take action against perpetrators of these incidents, Gautam Gupta, adviser of Federation of Indian Students Associations (FISA),alleged.
He accused the Australian government of not taking prompt action against the perpetrators of the attacks.
Nobody has been chargesheeted in the case of recent attack on three Indians by about 70 Australians. There is no programme to sensitise the Australian citizens not to attack the Indians, Gupta said.
He said about 12 institutions have been closed down recently in Melbourne and Sydney for failing to deliver on their promise of offering quality education.
But the international students of institutes have not been given admission in other institutes. No legal action has been taken against the people who had started these shoddy colleges with the aim to make money,he said.
Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is here on a state vist, however, said his government is committed to taking every physically possible step to ensure that all international students in his country remain safe.
