After Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the Narendra Modi-led government over its land bill in Parliament, the ruling BJP hit back by raking up “jijaji”, alluding to alleged irregularities in land deals made by the Congress vice-president’s brother-in-law Robert Vadra. Vadra, husband of Rahul’s sister Priyanka, has been accused of making sweetheart land deals in Haryana and Rajasthan while the states were ruled by the Congress. The BJP had repeatedly brought up the “jijaji” issue during its campaign for the Lok Sabha polls, with Modi claiming that the Congress was only faithful to the RSVP (Rahul Sonia Vadra Priyanka) model of governance, referring to the charges leveled against Vadra. [related-post] While Rahul has liberally used the phrase “suit-boot ki sarkaar” to attack Modi in an apparent reference to his allegedly Rs-10 lakh monogrammed suit, BJP leader Dilip Singh Bhuria retorted on Tuesday: “What about jijaji?” Though the word was expunged from Parliament’s records, BJP members continued to use it to attack Rahul outside the House. “You take his name. He wears suits, not us,” said Bhuria, a BJP MP from Ratlam. Inside Lok Sabha, Rural Development Minister Birender Singh, who had introduced the Bill on Monday, asked Rahul what was wrong about a farmer’s son or a poor man’s son wearing an expensive suit. “How much do the suits worn by those who are sitting with you cost,” he asked scathingly.
