After new law, Mizoram earns Rs 7.2 crore as liquor excise

The Mizoram government has raked in Rs 7.23 crores as liquor excise, state Home Minister R Lalzirliana, who also holds the excise portfolio, told the state assembly on Wednesday.

The state’s 18-year-old prohibition law was replaced with a new law allowing the sale and purchase of alcohol last July. Wine shops opened in March this year.

Responding to a question by opposition MLA Dr K Beichhua, R Lalzirliana said the state government has earned Rs 7,23,43,628 till June 25 this after the introduction of the new liquor law, the Mizoram Liquor (Prohibition and Control) Act 2014.

The Home Minister said a total of 1,008 people have also been booked under provisions of the new law, which prohibit public drunkenness, possessing and consuming liquor without proper permits and drink driving, among others.

Those found guilty of breaching the law have been fined money, ordered to perform community service or sent to jail, he said.

Responding to an additional question, R Lalzirliana said the revenue earned by the various state PSUs that look after the authorised liquor outlets are deposited to the state exchequer.
