1,000 recruitments since 2007 by state board illegal: Chouhan

The scam came to light months ago in Indore and investigations so far have shown involvement of politicians, bureaucrats, police officials.

In the first-ever public admission of the extent of irregularities in examinations and recruitment tests conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB), the state government Wednesday admitted that more than 1,000 recruitments were found to be illegal since 2007.

Admitting this in the Assembly, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the government body had a role in making 1.47 lakh appointments since 2006. He said no one would be spared irrespective of the clout they held.
The scam came to light months ago in Indore and investigations so far have shown involvement of politicians, bureaucrats, police officials and MPPEB officials, among others. BJP vice-president and former chief minister Uma Bharti has described the scam as bigger than the fodder scam in Bihar.

“Even one illegal recruitment is a taint on the government,’’ Chouhan said while replying to a debate on Governor’s address, but did not concede the Opposition’s demand for ordering a CBI probe saying the Special Task Force (STF) had done a very good job.

Outside the Assembly, the Congress has insisted on a CBI probe alleging that the scam reaches right up to the Chief Minister’s house.

The Special Task Force was initially asked to investigate only the pre-medical test (PMT) scam but it has unearthed many others, Chief Minister Chouhan said to back his argument that the government was serious about punishing the guilty.

The Congress staged a walkout when the Speaker turned down Leader of Opposition Satyadev Katare’s request to allow him to reply to the Chief Minister’s speech.
