Infant death: MS transferred,nurses to be charge sheeted

Medical Superintendent of Jalandhar hospital has been transferred and three nurses and an emergency medical officer would be charge sheeted for negligence in connection with death of a newborn,who was allegedly taken her off life support as her father was unable to pay Rs 200 last month.

In its report,the five-member committee constituted by the Punjab government to look into the causes of death of then infant girl held the Medical Superintendent Iqbal Singh and three staff nurses and an emergency medical officer guilty of negligence and recommended transfer of Singh.

Subsequently,he had been transferred,an official spokesman said here today.

The report also submitted that three staff nurses and one medical emergency officer be chargesheeted for negligence in performing their duties,the spokesman said.

In order to prevent recurrence of such unfortunate event and to improve the child care in the state,the report recommended that 12 special new-born care units will be established during the year 2012-13 in hospitals.

Besides,50 new born stabilisation units will be set up in District Hospitals,Sub-Divisional Hospitals and Community Health Centres for specialised care of new borns.
