Union Minister Babul Supriyo ran about a kilometre into the alleys of North Kolkata on Thursday afternoon, chasing and catching a Trinamool Congress supporter who had abused him after he had voted.
Supriyo and his parents had stepped out of their booth in Jorasanko’s Arya Kanya Vidyalaya in the afternoon when some Trinamool supporters started chanting “go back”, alleging he had come there to influence voters. Supriyo showed them his inked finger to say he had come as a voter, not as a minister or BJP leader, but they hurled abuses and called the Asansol MP and his parents ‘bogus voters’.

Following this, one of them came near Supriyo, who told him, “You are drunk.” The man started to run and Supriyo gave chase, his guards struggling to keep pace in the narrow alleys. Supriyo eventually caught the man and handed him over to the police, who later let him go.
“I had come here as a common voter,” Supriyo said later. “If the Trinamool thinks it can intimidate me with hooliganism, it is wrong. If it happens again, I will do the same thing.”
On Twitter, he posted: “Police has 2 answer 1 simple question-Why did they let off the drunk TMC cadre who I personally caught & handed over 2 them? Shameless stuff.”
Following the incident, Trinamool supporters, including candidate Smita Bakshi, demonstrated against Supriyo. “If he is a voter, he should have cast his vote and left… What kind of an MP is he? He has beaten up our workers and even heckled our women supporters… He was threatening us while the police watched as mute spectators,” she said.
Former BJP state president Rahul Sinha and Jorasanko candidate too arrived at the spot with his supporters. The two groups started to argue before police separated them.
A senior police officer said noone was detained or arrested as complaint has been lodged. “Senior police officers, who were there, intervened and the matter was resolved. But because it involves a central minister we did not want to take any chance and a huge force was sent immediately to the spot,” he added.
