You suggested a way out of the Rajya Sabha impasse. What was it? In the morning, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy (TMC) raised a point of order. When the ruling came, it clearly said the chair under Rule 255 has the power to throw out one or more MPs. Given the disruptions, the Chairman should act against members repeatedly rushing into the Well. Why is the government or MPs reluctant to bring a motion for suspension of MPs? It was done in Lok Sabha a couple of sessions ago. Rules against rushing into the Well and disrupting the House are different in two Houses. We have been asking for the rules to be made the same. What is that rule? In Lok Sabha, the Speaker has far greater powers under Rule 255 to act against MPs entering the Well. TMC unexpectedly sided with you on this despite the recent heated exchanges over state elections. MPs are raising concerns shared by the entire House. All of us, across party lines, want business to be transacted and that is the concern parties like TMC and SP raised in the House today. Do you see any business being transacted for the rest of the session? Has government reached out to the opposition? We are hopeful. The government has already circulated the list of business and we want all of that to be completed before the House adjourns sine die. The government has been accommodative of the opposition’s demands — they wanted calling attention on the 1 per cent jewellery excise and it was accepted. The government is serious about running the House and is making all possible efforts.
