Troops of the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with Mizoram Police, have recovered as many as six AK-56 assault rifles in two separate operations in the past four days. While two rifles were recovered from a house in Aizawl on Saturday night, four were earlier recovered from another house in Hnahlan on Thursday.

Giving details about the recoveries, the Defence PRO said that the two AK-56 assault rifles were seized from the house of one Lalrintluanga of Laungmual, a locality in Aizawl, the state capital. The seizure also included 500 rounds of ammunition. The Assam Rifles is the country’s oldest para-military organisation engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

The Assam Rifles troops had in October last year recovered five AK-47 rifles, three AK-56 rifles and 12 magazines from a house in Farkawn village near the Myanmar border in Mizoram. In May 2015, they had seized eight US-made M4 A1 rifles in Champhai, also near the Myanmar border.
