At least three infrastructure projects in the state have been named after spiritual guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Sanstha (BAPS) after his death on August 13. The latest such project is the west bank road, from Vadaj to Vasna, on the Sabarmati Riverfront.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has announced that a state-of-the- art auditorium in Rajkot will be named after Pramukh Swami. Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel dedicated the longest flyover in Vadodara to Pramukh Swami on August 17, the day the spiritual leader was cremated. The mandatory official procedures for all the christening are still pending.

The procedure requires the municipal commissioner to send a proposal to the Estate Management Committee, which then sends it to the general board for approval. An official of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) said, “The approval of the general board is a must before naming any roads, flyovers or areas of the city. The same procedure was not met in the naming of the Fatehgunj flyover or the cable suspension bridge.”

Incidentally, the VMC estate management committee received the mandatory proposal on September 1, following which, it has been now put forth before the general board that will meet on September 9. However, the general board is expected to be adjourned to mourn the death of Pramukh Swami. “The general board will deliberate about the proposal only in the next meeting,” the official said.

The basic official procedure for naming a certain street, road, project or bridge is that it has to be declared officially in the form of a standing committee resolution which is subject to ratification by the general board. The general board then adopts a resolution ratifying the standing committee proposal which is then announced in the general board with majority vote.

In the case of Sabarmati Riverfront Road, municipal secretary Arun Pandya said, “Since the road was part of the Riverfront, the naming process would be taken up by the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) board.” An official of the standing committee, however, said a proposal would be brought in the next meeting of the committee for passage.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel ended the speculation over the naming of Vadodara’s longest flyover in Fatehgunj on August 17 by announcing that the 1.4 km-long flyover will be called the Param Pujya Pramukh Swami Bridge.
