A joint team of Delhi police and Odisha police today arrested a suspected al-Qaeda terrorist from Cuttack city.
The suspected terrorist, Maulana Abdul Rehman (37), a member of the al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent, was arrested by a joint team of the special cell of Delhi Police and Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate police from his house at Paschima Kachha village under Jagatpur police station early this morning. Rehman, who holds a Ph. D in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Deobandh University in Saharanpur, runs a madrassa in Tangi area of Cutttack district.
AQIS is an affiliate body of al-Qaeda and was formed in September 2014 to coordinate activities in Indian subcontinent.
Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma said a special team of Delhi Police got to know about Rehman’s links with the al-Qaeda group after tracking his telephone call records. The team which landed here yesterday, raided Rehman’s residence last night. Rehman’s mobile phone, a tablet and his passport has also been seized. He was produced in a local court in Cuttack this afternoon following which the Delhi police team took him on transit remand.
Delhi Police and the Intelligence Bureau comprising three officials each of the Delhi Police, IB and Commissionerate police and other senior officials of the Commissionerate police raided the Paschima Kachha village under Jagatpur police station limits late in the night and arrested Rehman from his house.
The commissioner said Rehman would be produced in a local court in Salepur later in the day after which he would be taken on remand by the Delhi Police.
Sharma said as per the FIR lodged by Delhi police, Rehman was reportedly engaged recruiting members for AQIS. He has travelled to Pakistan, Dubai, London and Saudi Arab. In India, his link was mostly in Karnataka, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. The details of his involvement in any terrorist activities would be revealed only after his interrogation by the Delhi Police, said police commissioner.Rehman has three children.
Rehman’s elder brother Tariq Ali was arrested in connection with an attack on the American Embassy in 2001.
