Stubble burning in Moga: Woman dies, farmer booked

The woman, aged 80, who was passing by fainted and fell down because of heavy smog that engulfed the area.

A FARMER of Dosanjh vilage in Punjab was booked on Sunday after a woman died because of the smoke due to paddy stubble burning in his field.

Gurpreet Singh Raju, the farmer, had set fire to his field to burn paddy stubble late on Saturday. Police said he set the field on fire despite the fact that it was located close to human settlement.

A few minutes later, Jeeto, an 80-year-old woman, who was passing by, fainted because of the heavy smoke engulfing the area. She also suffered serious burn injuries. She was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Moga, which referred referred her to the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot. Again, doctors referred her to PGIMER, Chandigarh. She died on the way.

The police have booked Raju under Section 188 of IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) in the FIR registered at Myna police station in Moga. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhjinder Singh said that following the death of the woman, another FIR under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) was registered. The FIR has been registered on the statement of Resham Singh, grandson of the woman.

“The accused is yet to be arrested,” said the ASI.
